Understanding Orthognathic Surgery

What is orthognathic surgery?

Orthognathic surgery involves the surgical manipulation of the facial bones to correct conditions such as overbites, underbites, open bites, and facial asymmetry. It aims to improve bite function, speech, and facial appearance.

Why is it performed?

Orthognathic surgery in Delhi is recommended for individuals with severe jaw misalignment issues that cannot be corrected with orthodontic treatment alone. It addresses functional problems such as difficulty chewing, speaking, and breathing, as well as cosmetic concerns related to facial harmony.

Common Orthognathic Surgery Procedures

Orthognathic surgery encompasses a range of procedures tailored to each patient’s specific needs. Some of the common procedures include:

  • Jaw correction surgery: This involves repositioning the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible), or both to achieve proper alignment.
  • Chin augmentation: In cases of receding or protruding chins, orthognathic surgery can modify the position and shape of the chin for improved facial balance.
  • Orthodontic braces: Orthodontic treatment often precedes and follows orthognathic surgery to align the teeth properly within the corrected jaw structure.

The Process of Orthognathic Surgery

Before undergoing orthognathic surgery, patients undergo thorough evaluation and planning. This includes orthodontic treatment to align the teeth and comprehensive imaging studies to assess the facial structure. The surgical procedure itself is performed under general anesthesia and involves precise bone manipulation guided by computerized planning. Following surgery, patients require a period of recovery and follow-up care to monitor healing and adjust to the new jaw position.

Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

The preparation of your mouth before the placement of a prosthesis is referred to as pre-prosthetic surgery.

Some patients require minor oral surgical procedures before receiving a partial or complete denture, in order to ensure the maximum level of comfort. A denture sits on the bone ridge, so it is very important that the bone is the proper shape and size. If a tooth needs to be extracted, the underlying bone might be left sharp and uneven. For the best fit of a denture, the bone might need to be smoothed out or reshaped. Occasionally, excess bone would need to be removed prior to denture insertion.

One or more of the following procedures might need to be performed in order to prepare your mouth for a denture:

  • Bone smoothing and reshaping
  • Removal of excess bone
  • Bone ridge reduction
  • Removal of excess gum tissue
  • Exposure of impacted teeth

We will review your particular needs with you during your appointment.

Surgical Orthodontics

What Does This
Surgery Address?

Jaw surgery aims to correct functional and cosmetic discrepancies in the face. Depending on the type of surgery, it aims at its most fundamental level to improve the relationship of teeth and jaws to each other together with optimising and harmonising facial appearance. At its more complex, it may improve speech, breathing, chewing, while simultaneously balancing the different parts of the face, teeth, lips, nose and chin into an aesthetic harmonious unit. As a consequence it has been shown to improve Quality of Life as a result of better function, increased self-esteem and confidence. It is one of the few interventions in surgery where aesthetic enhancement and functional improvement are interdependent.

How Do We Plan Your Case Digitally?

Dr Akash Sachdeva commitment to precision in orthognathic surgical planning is exemplified by the use of cutting-edge digital technology that enhances his hands-on approach to planning. As a prospective patient, you can expect a meticulous and advanced approach to your case, ensuring optimal outcomes tailored to your unique facial anatomy.
During our initial encounter, a provisional plan is shared to communicate the broad aspects of the treatment. This plan is based on the specific needs of each case and the essential information required for collaboration with orthodontists and patients. Initial imaging, whether plain X-rays or 3D CT scans, is conducted as needed. However, the final plan and surgical hardware are consistently developed using digital 3D CT and cutting-edge digital printing technology.

Oral Pathology

Oral pathology refers to diseases of the jaw bones, soft tissues of the face, and oral cavity. Oral pathology will often require a biopsy where a sample of the tissue is sent to a specialist who will look at the specimen under a microscope in order to confirm the diagnosis. We can then determine if any additional treatment is required.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which one experiences one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep.

Sleep apnea is an ongoing condition that disrupts sleep. When breathing is paused or becomes shallow, one will often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep, making the quality of sleep poor.

Sleep apnea can be treated with lifestyle changes, mouthpieces, breathing devices, and/or surgery.

For mild sleep apnea, a custom fitted mouthpiece or some lifestyle changes (weight loss, smoking cessation, clearing nasal passages) may be helpful.

For moderate to severe sleep apnea, a breathing device called CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) or surgery to widen the breathing passages by shrinking, stiffening, or removing excess tissue in the mouth and throat or resetting the lower jaw may be helpful. A CPAP machine uses a mask that fits over your mouth and/or nose and gently blows air into your throat. This air pressure helps keep your airway open while you sleep. Surgery to shrink the tissue involves a small shot into the breathing passages. Surgery to stiffen excess tissue requires a small incision in the tissue and the insertion of a piece of stiff plastic.
